Teaching Courage
By Dr. Richard S. Kirby, April 18, 2003

This is just to confirm briefly that I spoke to Professor Arthur Ellis (Art) of Seattle Pacific University (SPU) yesterday and Dick (Richard J. Spady of the Forum Foundation, Seattle) today.

As a result I am proposing this title for the November 2003 conference or colloquium to follow up Arthur's recent Dominican Retreat Center SPU conference on moral education:

TEACHING COURAGE:

New Horizons in Psycho-Social And Character Education for military and other academies, military chaplains, education of children of military and associated audiences.

A two and one half day consultation at ?Casey Camp.

I will propose this to:

The Military Chaplains Association
The US Army Recruiting Office
Representatives of the major Armed Forces academies in the USA (Army, Navy, Air Force).

The sponsoring organizations will therefore, I hope, be: the Dodd Institute, the Forum Foundation, and SPU, and (I will strongly recommend) the Military Chaplains Association and the US Army Recruiting Office.

Our book, The Leadership of Civilization will be a text for the inquiry taking place at the gathering, but I will also write a monograph supplement for it, applying Social Quantum Theory to Military Science and Military Education. This monograph supplement will contain a mission statement for the proposed colloquium.

I will gladly serve as conference conveyor and manager, but I am grateful to Art of inquiring into the availability of Casey Camp as a very suitable locale for us. Failing that, possibly Fort Lewis might be available.

Although our hope is to hold this in November, we might have to settle for a pilot study then, and a full colloquium in April 2004. Either way we will have the chance to present our proposal to the Military Chaplains Association a couple of weeks from now, and to ask Amos Davidowitz of the Israeli Army if he would serve as a consultant to this project to give it both international and interfaith depth.

I plan to have the monograph supplement, applying Social Quantum Theory to Military Science and Military Education, and containing a mission statement for the proposed colloquium, ready to distribute at the Military Chaplains Association a couple of weeks from now .

Richard
