Since its foundation in 1990 the Centre for Social Innovation, in Vienna has been committed to contribute to the advancement of empirically substantiated social innovation by interdisciplinary and international co-operation.

'Social innovation' is defined as invention, adjustment or application of new societal concepts applicable to decision making and development processes in public administration, political bodies, legislation, private enterprises, organisations of the social partners and of the civil society.

The Center for Social Innovation promotes innovative, effective, and efficient solutions to social problems in the United States and around the world through research, teaching, and outreach. The Center pursues this mission in a number of ways: adapting business knowledge, experience, and skills to the challenges facing managers and organizations working to improve social conditions; bringing academic rigor to the generation of new knowledge that enhances our collective understanding of the social sector; and supporting and facilitating inquiry that illuminates the fundamental nature of important social problems.

CSI performs research, education and consultancy to fill in the gaps between social needs and technological and organisational potentials in the knowledge based society of present time. By connecting systematically the scientific basis with application oriented approaches, CSI fulfils an important societal function as an interface beyond disciplinary rigidities. CSI is a private, non-profit research institute, based in Vienna, Austria.

Forum International de l'Innovation Sociale

Created in 1976, the Forum International de l'Innovation Sociale (the Forum) is an international non-profit association whose aim is to promote social innovation in private and public institutions. "Social innovation" means the ability to innovate in terms of social behaviors, whether personal or professional. The term also implies the capacity to envision options other than repetition and reproduction of past behavior. The term focuses on the ability to transform roles and, thereby, on the ability to contribute to the transformation of institutions.

The web host for the Institute for Social Innovations and other emerging institutes, The Global Ideas Bank remains the biggest knowledge base and portal for social innovation around. The Center for Alternative Development Initiatives

The Center for Alternative Development Initiatives (CADI) is a Philippine-based civil society organization (CSO) dedicated to the study, encouragement and implementation of sustainable development. CADI was established in February 1988 to spread the reality of holistic sciences and philosophies of human beings, society and nature.

Australian Foresight Institute

The Australian Foresight Institute (AFI) is situated in Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. AFI is a specialised research and postgraduate teaching unit which is part of Chancellery at the University. It was established in 1999 by Dr. Richard Slaughter to develop an innovative set of postgraduate programs and research in the area of applied foresight. Apart from supporting the University in developing its own forward-looking strategies, the main aims are:

  • provide a global resource centre for strategic foresight™
  • create and deliver world class professional programs
  • carry out original research into the nature and uses of foresight
  • focus on the implementation of foresight in organisations
  • work toward the emergence of social foresight in Australia
